Healthcare Facilities for Retired Railway Employees – RELHS

Introduction

Indian Railways has a well-established healthcare system for its serving and retired employees and their eligible family members. Medical facilities are provided through a network of Railway hospitals, health units and private empanelled hospitals across the country.

For retired Railway employees, healthcare facilities are primarily provided under the Retired Employees Liberalised Health Scheme (RELHS). The scheme enables eligible retired employees and their eligible family members to continue to avail medical facilities after retirement, as per the applicable Railway rules and guidelines.

RELHS beneficiaries can obtain treatment at Railway hospitals and health units. Wherever the required specialist consultation, investigation or treatment is not available in the Railway healthcare system, beneficiaries may be referred to private empanelled hospitals through the prescribed referral procedure.

With UMID and HMIS, healthcare services are increasingly integrated through a common digital platform, facilitating registration, consultation, medical records, prescriptions, investigations and digital referral to empanelled hospitals.

The HMIS platform also provides a live directory of empanelled HCOs, including their location, specialities/services and patient ratings, thereby enabling beneficiaries to make informed choices within the framework of Railway rules.

The digital system is intended to make healthcare delivery more accessible, seamless, transparent and beneficiary-centric.
