STUDENTS ENROLMENT IN SAINIK SCHOOL, PURULIA

  1. SHRI JYOTIRMAY SINGH MAHATO:
    Will the Minister of DEFENCE be pleased to state:

(a) the current number of students enrolled at Sainik School, Purulia vis-a-vis its sanctioned capacity;

(b) whether the Government has undertaken any initiative to increase the intake capacity or expand the academic and residential facilities at Sainik School, Purulia and if so, the details thereof, along with the timeline for its implementation; and

(c) the pass percentage of students from Sainik School, Purulia during the last five years, along with the number of students admitted to the National Defence Academy (NDA) and other military training institutions, year-wise?

IN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

(a) to (c) Sainik School, Purulia has a sanctioned strength of 550 Cadets in the Academic Year (AY) 2026-27, against which 530 cadets are enrolled. Sainik Schools are permitted to enroll students in excess of the optimum strength of 525, keeping in view the available capacity for such increases. Accordingly, the sanctioned strength of Sainik School, Purulia has been increased to 610 for AY 2027-28.

The Sainik School Society which manages the Sainik Schools makes assessments of infrastructural gaps in academic and residential facilities, sports and training infrastructure/facilities, etc, of Sainik Schools including Sainik School, Purulia for ensuring their upgradation, renovation, maintenance and augmentation, as and when required

The pass percentage of cadets of Sainik School, Purulia in the Written Test and SSB for entry into National Defence Academy and other Military institutions have shown an increasing trend from 8.14% in 2021-22 to 39.53% in 2025-26; and from zero in 2021-22 to 6.97% in 2025-26 respectively
